Many years ago, in the charming City of Keego Harbor, there lived a remarkable woman named Mrs. Frances M. Leaf, though everyone lovingly called her Fran. Fran was kind, smart, and deeply devoted to her community. She worked tirelessly to ensure that everyone received the best education possible. She was a fixture in the community, working in the English department at OCC, serving as President of the West Bloomfield Board of Education, and even as Vice President of the Oakland County School Board Association. But Fran wasn’t all work—she loved to have fun, too! One of her favorite places was the Michigan State Fair, where she dedicated many years to making sure kids and their families had a safe and magical experience. In 1969, the community honored her by naming her “Woman of the Year.”
When Fran suddenly passed away just two years later, the people of Keego Harbor wanted to honor her memory. They collected money and used it to create Fran Leaf Park, a special place where children and families could play and learn. Nestled in the heart of Keego Harbor, the park is bordered by a canal on one side and a beautiful wetland full of trees and wildlife on the other.
Now, some say that Fran occasionally visits this special park. They believe her spirit watches over it, ensuring it remains a safe haven for kids to play, learn, and grow. During story time under the willow tree, some have heard an extra voice—just a whisper—joining in with the storyteller. People would look around, puzzled, but there was never anyone there. Some say it’s just the wind rustling through the leaves, or perhaps the gentle lapping of water in the canal. But others believe that whisper and the cool breeze you feel on the warmest days is Fran herself, sitting down beside the children, enjoying the stories just as much as they are.
So, the next time you visit Fran Leaf Park, take a moment to listen. You might hear the birds and frogs singing from the wetland, or the gentle splashing of the canal’s waters. And if you’re lucky, you might hear the faintest whisper of a voice. But don’t be afraid—it’s just Fran, visiting her park, making sure it remains a place of joy and laughter forever.
I was born and raised in Keego Harbor , 1966 . I didn’t live in that part of Keego but I visited the park often . I attended Roosevelt Elemenatary as a kid and when I wasn’t in school my favorite thing to do was ride my bike through the city stopping occasionally just to sit and rest .
On one of those occasions it happened to be at Fran Leaf Park where I sat near the water and I remember poking a long stick into the muck near the edge . At that moment , reflected in the water I remember seeing a dark shadow , like somebody was standing behind me . It was so life like that I immediately turned around expecting to see someone standing there , but of course there was no one there . I was very young and very scared and I also remember as I peddled away hearing loud whispers .
I got far enough away and stopped to look back and the wind had gone crazy . All the trees had started rustling with the wind and the branches were swaying tremendously and in a single moment it all stopped , it was calm and quiet , like somebody pushed a button and everything stopped . I never went back to the park and I have never told anyone what had happened . I do often think about it though and I still wonder so many years later if it was Fran .
